The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2012 to the "International Year of Sustainable Energy for All" (SE4All). The SE4All-initiative was also presented at the Rio+20-conference in 2012. Sustainable development has to be based on universal access to renewable energy, which is clean, efficient and affordable. A fifth of human mankind has no access to modern energy services. Twice as much, approx. 3 billion people, use wood, charcoal or droppings of animals for heating and cooking, which is - in a perspective of a global economy - whether just nor sustainable. The major cause of the continued deterioration of the global environment is the unsustainable pattern of consumption (e.g. the waste of fossil fuels) and production, particularly in industrialized countries. As a result, the climate is changing. Climate change affects all of us, but in the first place the poorest regions and people. Apart from moral commitments, the SE4All-initiative is also a future market for enterprises and investors (combined with the "energy-water-nutrition Nexus"). In the end, the support of sustainable modern energy services is an investment in our common future. By 2030, three global objectives are to be accomplished: 1.) to ensure universal access to modern energy services, 2.) to double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency, and 3.) to double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix. Therefore, the leadership and capacity of all stakeholders will be required - business and investors, academia, government, and civil society. The EU and promoters from Austria actively support the UN SE4All-initiative. The panel discussion will provide background information on the SE4All-initiative and deal with questions focusing on relevant projects.
